Aroldis Chapman Did Not Break His Fastest Pitch Speed Record Last Night

In the Reds vs. Pirates game last night, it appeared that Aroldis Chapman broke his previous pitching speed record of 105.1 mph, with a reading of 106 mph from the scoreboard radar.
However, MLB's Pitch F/X data showed the pitch to be 'only' 102.4 mph....

According to a Sport Science episode, a weighted bat or bat ring will upset a hitter's timing and result in slightly slower bat speed - even though it feels like a more powerful swing.
It's hard to argue against science.
So the takeaway from this is - use your normal bat (without weights) in the on-deck circle.

Still Waiting on First 100 mph Pitch in Majors

The radar gun read 100 mph in the 9th inning when Dodgers' Jonathan Broxton pitched to Luis Rodriguez of San Diego at Petco Park.
This would have made Broxton the first pitcher in the majors to hit 100 mph this season. However, the gun was off by 0.9 mph. The pitch maxed out at 98.6 mph and slowed to 89.4 mph when it crossed the plate.
