Baseball's Greatest Mystery Revealed

How fast do major league pitchers really throw?

Editors published 8/7/2008 11:33:00 AM
As part of our Grand Opening, we are introducing something the baseball world has never seen before.

Have you ever stood around the water cooler wondering which major league pitcher is the fastest of them all?

No more guessing and wondering. Now you will know exactly.

By the start of the 2008 season, Major League Baseball installed sophisticated technology to accurately record each pitch, pitch identification, pitch speed and more.

We will be bringing you the daily list of Top Guns in the majors. See Top Gun list

We will be rolling out much more never-before-seen stats over the next few days and weeks.

Last night, Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers hurled a fastball at 98.5 mph to Paul Kenerko in the 8th. This fastball crossed the plate at 89.9 mph and dropped 4.5 inches (must have been a two seamer).

He beat the Cardinal's Chris Perez with a 97.7 mph zinger to Jeff Kent.

Update 8/7/2008 3:09 PM Pitcher breaks 100 mph barrier

The Tiger's Fernando Rodney threw a 100.2 mph fastball on 8/5/2008.

If these numbers are right, there are probably many pitchers throwing over 100 mph. I wonder about those radar guns at the game.
